Lessons
I teach guitar lessons at my home in Thurmont, MD. I am within short driving distance of Walkersville, Woodsboro, Sabillasville, Cascade and Emmitsburg, MD and Fairfield, Blue Ridge Summit, Waynesboro and Gettysburg, PA. I have easy parking. I teach all styles of guitar to all ages on both electric and acoustic guitars. My guitar lessons are tailored to the individual student, taking into consideration his/her goals and interests. Subjects that can be studied include, but are not limited to, tab and standard notation reading, improvisation, scales, CAGED System, as well as the learning of individual songs and styles chosen by the student. I am well versed and experienced in rock, Americana, blues, jazz, country, bluegrass, gospel, roots and folk styles of guitar.
Teaching Style
I teach in a positive stress free style. Guitar lessons should be fun and enjoyable and in no way stressful. The lessons are tailored to each individual student in terms of pace and musical style. If you have a busy schedule you will never be made to feel guilty due to a low practice week.
Education
My education consists of private guitar instruction from Fred Costlow, Mary Claire Engels, Ronald Pearl, Rick Whitehead, Sheryl Bailey, and Gerry Kunkel. I studied theory with Mildred Trevvett at Thomas Johnson High School and Frederick Community College. I have also studied extensively on my own using books, video and my own transcribing.
Experience
I have taught continually for over the last 20 yrs. My students have ranged in age from 5 years to over 70 learning a wide range of styles including rock, bluegrass, folk, heavy metal, blues, jazz and country. My teaching career started at the now defunct Frederick House of Music and after a short time I moved to Boe's Strings, Inc. While at Boe's Strings I started teaching at home. I have performed in a number of bands playing styles such as rock, blues, jazz, and country. Some of the bands included Cadillac Cowboys, Copperhead Road, Southern Horizon, Howard Burns Big Band, and Mainstream Jazz. Currently my wife Patty and I have a duo that plays in and around the area.
